Meaningful experiences giving insight into Maori history, culture and values….

We can cater for groups of up to 50 people    and specialize in tours for education groups   from primary to tertiary.

Tours for your special interest  or  visiting cruise ships can also be arranged  and we work with you to find the best option for your timetable and needs.

Tours for groups operate year round – prior booking is required.

Options include:
MANAWA (Half Day Tour) – 3.5 to 5 hours – up to 50 guests.

KAIKOURA CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS – 2 hours – up to 50 guests

TE RA – 5.5 to 6 hours – up to 30 guests.

Minimum numbers apply.

You don’t have to fit in our box though.  At Maori Tours Kaikoura we appreciate your individual needs – so let us create just the right kind of experience for your group.

Tailored programmes  range  from as little as 2 hours through to 3 full days of  activities.

Explore Kaikoura from the base of our majestic mountains to the ocean foreshore during our fun filled Te Ra tour.

What to Expect

You will travel to several important Kaikoura locations and whilst there hear tales of bygone days and see legends still hidden in the landscape today.

Right from the start you’ll be involved and as you join in customs and traditions you can ask questions about the things you want to know more about.

Throughout the journey you’ll have opportunities to learn Maori ways – a traditional greeting, weave with harakeke (the native flax plant) and much more.

Midway through there’s a short stop for light refreshments and then it’s a short drive to the forest walk where you’ll be shown a variety of plants and trees – some have stood for hundreds of years.  As you wander through the well-defined track, family members will share knowledge about how plants are used for food and medicine.

This is a real cultural exchange and offers genuine insight into Maori people and way of life.

Kaikoura Cultural Highlights

..

Kaikoura is a place of immense natural beauty with dramatic land and seascapes – the town is sited on a peninsula that juts out from the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges.  These often snow-clad mountains serve as a striking backdrop for the village and your photographs.

 

What to expect
As you move from site to site you’ll be shown beautiful carvings and watch as they come to life through legends of old – teaching lessons for today.

You’ll hear about Maui a who pulled the North Island from the sea – and discover why Kaikoura features in this famous legend.

Driving by the ever changing Pacific Ocean you’ll learn of conservation efforts the local Maori community are involved in.

And as your time concludes you’ll realise secrets of the incredible landscape have been revealed – and you’ve been gifted a new way to see Kaikoura forevermore.

TE Ra

…You’ll be involved right from the start as you’re introduced to the culture, history and values of Maori people.

What to expect
Be guided through the Powhiri (welcome ceremony) process creating a pathway to cultural understanding.
Visit the foreshore with spectacular limestone formations and hear about Tangaroa ‘God of the Ocean’ and Maori conservation values.
Learn a Maori song, traditional greetings and play games designed to teach lessons handed down for many generations.
Stroll through native forest and discover trees that have stood for more than 500 years and find out the medicinal uses of plants.
Throughout the day you can ask questions of your hosts and really get to know them – especially during the stop for a scrumptious lunch which includes local flavours.
