MĀNAWA – ITIBIG ON REVELATIONS AND FUN
Groups 15-50 POA
Kaikōura is home to the Ngāti Kurī people – a sub-tribe of the South Island’s largest tribe Ngāi Tahu – whose ancestors have lived here for more than 800 years. Your guide will take you to the best places and through their family connections share the precise history and legends of the area as well as teach you customs.
You’ll be involved from the start and be taught how to introduce yourself, be given a Māori name, join in activities and games, understand their origins and why they are played.
At the various sites you’ll be treated to breathtaking views and as you listen to your guide, you’ll feel the spirit of age old knowledge echoing through the voices of today.
Midway through, stop to enjoy a delicious bite to eat with the family and your guide will reveal the importance of sharing food before travelling to the Sharks tooth to hear about Mauī a demi God famous throughout the Pacific.
At the end of this intimate cultural exchange you will have been entertained and enlightened whilst soaking up the wisdom of your guide who – you met as a stranger and by now – will feel like family.
NB: Depending on weather and road conditions on the day, actual sites visited may vary.
